What is Spoke’n Revolutions?

The Spoke’n Revolutions youth cycling program was created for youth in 2011 to address the persistent achievement gap between Black and Latino students and their White and Asian peers. The goal is to provide a challenging summer learning experience and out-of-school activity that prepare youth for success.  Since that beginning, it’s become much more than that.

The bike programs are fully supported (meaning there’s a van if you need it), journey-based, educational outdoor experiences . With avenues for health, environmental and educational enrichment that traditional sports and indoor classes can’t match. When joining the program youth are outfitted with a bike, biking gear, bike safety training expertise and cycling experiences that are usually out of reach due to costs.

It’s easy to join Spoke’n Revolutions and become one of over 119 youth that have already taken long distance bike trips covering over 8,200 miles through 35 states. Or youth can join the Weekend Excursions program and see North Carolina like never before.

Spoke’n Revolutions is broken into two programs:

Youth are challenged to succeed on the road and in life. Through these adventures, they’ll be stronger. Mentally and physically.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Participation in the Spoke’n Revolutions program is FREE. We ask you to get community support for your participation by asking people to help you raise $300

DO I NEED A BIKE?
If you have a road bike, great! If you don’t we’ll supply you with one.

WHERE DO PRACTICE RIDES HAPPEN?
At SnR HQ. 117 W Main Street in Carrboro.

DO I NEED TO WEAR SPECIAL BIKE CLOTHES?
Not necessarily. But we do suggest it. Clothing such as bike shorts help you in the ride. Bike style jerseys wick off sweat and dries much faster than cotton shirts. Also, cotton shirts can make you cold if the temperature drops for a lot longer.

WHAT IF I CAN’T MAKE EVERY TRAINING RIDE OR TEAM MEETING?
Ask yourself this: If I were on a basketball, football, soccer, lacrosse, or any other team and missed practice would I expect to play in the game? Commit yourself to us and we’ll commit to you.

WHAT OTHER AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ARE THERE BESIDES PRACTICE RIDES?
Educational sessions on the social, historical and environmental issues connected with our tours.

WHAT HAPPENS ON PRACTICE RIDES?
You participate in team rides in the countryside of the Triangle to build camaraderie, stamina, and confidence on the bike, and get you outdoors in your home community.

HOW ARE TOUR ROUTES CREATED?
Tour routes are created that inspire connection to the natural world that help youth develop an understanding of the impact that historical events have on the present

WHAT HAPPENS ON TOUR?
The training and educational activities culminate in a 2-week long, 700-mile summer cycling tour based on culturally significant and historic routes.

You’ll average 55 miles a day, visit state and national parks and historic sites along the route, and camp most nights. You’ll participate in teamwork activities during the tour such as:
